ART OF THE IN-BETWEEN
A boutique hotel experience that keeps Comme des Garcons overall feeling of beauty and surprise.
Founder of the Japanese design label, Comme des Garcons, meaning “like boys.” She was inspired to make a clothing line that no one else’s approval but her own self. Because of her fine arts background, she often created these outfits that stood out among the usual design brands.
Comme des Garcons constant use of contrast and juxtaposition has pushed me to design with the idea of surprise and hidden features that some would miss if they were experience this place for themselves.
From abstract clothing to casual wear. The brand is more about this feeling and attitude that the clothing gives off.
Known for its upscaled shopping, five star restaurants, Beverly Hills is a strange crossover of luxury living and tourist attraction.
Trendy individuals looking to lounge and stay at a sophisticated but surprising boutique hotel.
Analyzing the brand, they are bold and in your face with deeper meaning. They like to create mystery and surprise by producing things that are different that the things around them.

While first encountering the lenticular facade of the building, a guest sees their reflection looking back at them. On second glance, a guest sees the Comme des Garcons Play logo staring back at them.

Like many luxury hotels, a guest enters this refined and clean white room. As they walk to the check in desk, they will notice that their steps leaves a mark behind them.

The contrast between this bright and clean hallway to this dim lit urban space

The main bar is located right in the middle, but has all these individual rooms that follow Kawakubo’s design theory

When entering guest are intrigued to look into the room because of its spiral marble portal. This will take them away from typical luxury and send them into a minimal looking room.

The first encounter it comes off as very simple, but like the brand itself, there is deeper meaning and feeling to the room.

Because I wanted to add an element of surprise in the room and also relate it to the brands Japanese roots, I made it possible that guest could move the flooring to create their own modified furniture.
